This is where it all started! The first of Phryne's adventures from Australia's most elegant and irrepressible sleuth.
The first classic Phryne Fisher mystery, featuring our delectable heroine, cocaine, communism and adventure. Phryne leaves the tedium of English high society for Melbourne, Australia, and never looks back. The London season is in full fling at the end of the 1920s, but the Honorable Phryne Fisher―she of the green-gray eyes, diamant garters and outfits that should not be sprung suddenly on those of nervous dispositions―is rapidly tiring of the tedium of arranging flowers, making polite conversations with retired colonels, and dancing with weak-chinned men.
Instead, Phryne decides it might be rather amusing to try her hand at being a lady detective in Melbourne, Australia. Almost immediately from the time she books into the Windsor Hotel, Phryne is embroiled in mystery: poisoned wives, cocaine smuggling rings, corrupt cops and communism―not to mention erotic encounters with the beautiful Russian dancer, Sasha de Lisse―until her adventure reaches its steamy end in the Turkish baths of Little Lonsdale Street.

Review
"The growing American audience for Phryne Fisher, Australian author Greenwood's independent 1920s female sleuth, will be delighted that her diverting first mystery is finally available in the U.S. Fisher's off-the-cuff solving of a high society jewel theft leads her to her first professional engagement when a witness to her brilliance asks her to investigate a possible poisoning-in-progress. The detective's admirable willingness to intervene to help those in distress involves her in a variety of other puzzles, including identifying the King of Snow, who has taken over the Melbourne drug trade. Many of the members of Fisher's entourage familiar from later novels make their debuts as well." -Publishers Weekly
"The tricky plot, lively writing, likable flapper sleuth, and superb sense of period will delight readers who have already read (or will be motivated to seek) later books in the series already issued by Poisoned Pen." -Ellery Queen Mystery Magazine
"With Phryne Fisher, the indefatigable Greenwood has invented the character-you-fall-in-love-with genre." -The Australian

I was not disappointed. I was delighted by all the different characters
By April M. Smith
I came to these novels after watching the television series. I am one of Those People who has always Read The Book, and I know that due to the different requirements of adapting stories for television, The Books are frequently full of more characters, subplots, and motivations than film has time to express.
In this respect, I was not disappointed. I was delighted by all the different characters, the extra little cases, the side details; definitely worth the read.
Ms Greenwood's writing is interesting; almost Homeric in its constant description of details, its constant repetition of phrase. Detective-Inspector John 'call me Jack; everyone calls me Jack' Robinson and Miss Fisher's swinging black cap of hair are beginning to remind me of Achilles Leader of Men and Athene the Grey-Eyed Goddess.
I will say; once you get used to her style, it does not impede your enjoyment of the novels. They are a bit sordid; Miss Fisher ends up naked in every novel, voluntarily, involuntarily, 'artlessly,' randomly - but then, when have murder mysteries not been sordid? It's actually refreshing to have a heroine who is fully engaged in the tumult, rather than a cold observer.
If you love wish fulfillment fantasy Mary Sues in fabulous Erte gowns and Russian leather boots who drive Hispano-Suizas and eat impeccable little teacakes all the time, these novels are marvelous.

Learned of the series by watching the Australian TV show on Netflix. I love the spiciness of Miss Phryne Fisher of both page and screen and look forward to continuing the stories of her exploits, which is y the highest praise I can offer after reading a first book.
