A new foothold
By C. L. Messina
I was once traveling on the train through Paris looking for a concert venue. I asked a stranger for help pointing to my map within a travel guide. The front of the guide had a stereotypical graying old fellow on the cover wearing a beret, obviously enjoying his work in the vineyard. The French stranger chuckled at the cover and said, 'typical'. The French, certainly the young ones, are well-aware that the world sees them like this and are also aware that France is much more varied and (certainly in the city) much more in step with or even ahead of the times. I think that slips past our own culture (I'm an American) and new students need something to shake that image out of their heads.

So we take French in High School and are beaten over the head with rules we often forget under the pressure of maintaining grade point averages. We try to learn the language on our own and there we are again but now we're being babied. We're learning about apples and oranges, what color dad's coat is and so forth. We need to know those things but I've come to learn that we need something more. We need more than soccer and cheese. We need a piece of the culture that speaks to us, that makes us LOVE France and gives us better insight into what France is about. I think this is probably the best place to start.

Mind you, I actually was using this technique before I stumbled on the book. The process is straight-forward. Find a foreign song you LOVE and you'll WANT to learn the words. You'll likely get proper pronunciation in the process. After you learn the words, learn the translation and you've got one more piece to your language puzzle. It works. For example, how many kids know about Friar/Brother Jacob?

The book begins by showing us that French is spoken in many parts of the world, some you're likely familiar with others you might not be. It then tells us about each artist/band, then lyrics with great translations and then a brief overview of the language. It's a small book but easy on the eyes. The band bios probably could have been omitted but such a small book needs a little filler. I think the strongest part of the book is the casual colloquial approach it introduces the language with. It feels like a friend is giving you pointers which is refreshing. The other strength it has is offering us a variety of MODERN French music. I wouldn't have had any interest in it if it had Edith Piaf or Charles Trenet, though I like Trenet. It's a credit to the author that she was able to get such new artists to share. The other strength of the book are the translations and layout of lyric/translation. You can find a lot of this stuff on the internet but finding a reliable translation might be trickier. You have to keep in mind that all translations are paraphrases and some words mean different things in different contexts or combinations. Same's true for English. That said, I just wish there were more editions of this series.

From a personal standpoint, there are other French bands/artists that appeal to me more than these and an honest love for a band is really going to get you furthest with this approach. That said, here are a few more bands/songs to consider and perhaps add to your list of great French music to learn from.

MODERN SOUNDING FRENCH GROUPS:
Stereolab
Yelle
Brigitte
Malajube (the song 'Montreal -40C' is a standout)
Stereo Total
The Prototypes

60's RETRO FRENCH SINGERS:
Charles Dutronc (particularly the song 'Et Moi, et moi, et moi')
Serge Gainsbourg
Brigitte Bardot

40's/50's FRENCH SINGERS
Charles Trenet
Yves Montand
Edith Piaf

As the author states, this book is just part of the bigger picture, which is true. You will need more than one book to learn ANY language. More than two books, more than one song and so forth. A language is a living thing. Why expect to understand such a thing in 30 minutes? English probably took you 5 years to speak like a 5 year old. But you've got to start somewhere and starting with songs is a great approach. Dig through this book and perhaps explore the others I've added, try to get good translations and you've got a great view into more than just mechanical descriptions of objects French language books give us, you're getting French heart and soul.

Enjoyed and given to friends too
By Mary
I have enjoyed this CD and have purchased it for friends too. On my first listen, I immediately liked only two of the songs, but music is a matter of personal taste and after listening to this CD a few more times, I appreciated more of the songs. This CD will not teach you French, but it can improve your French a bit if you already know some. I use some of the phrases I learned from these songs in my daily life now, having recently moved to France.

very nice product
By Public Defender 11th Judical Circuit
I am learning French and thought I would try this product. I am really impressed with the quality of the music as well as the book containing lyrics and band biographies. This is well produced and well worth the money in my opinion. French music takes a little getting used to but it is very creative. The tunes do run through my mind and the words take on meaning.
