He's out to take over...your life!

Your mom has gotten a new job at the labs of Dr. Eeek. Your mom has promised you that she'll take you and your friend Sam to the movies once you meet her at Dr. Eeek's labs. You and Sam go, and expect a great time at the movies--but instead you have a terrifying time at the labs of Dr. Eeek.

If you choose to follow a chimpanzee, you find yourself in a room full of chimps who are being examined. But is the idea really as cool as it seems? If you choose to examine some green goo, you might find yourself trapped in a virtual video game where you actually can die! If you choose to take part in a test, you'll find yourself in a maze with many hungry dogs! But no matter what path you choose, the terror of Dr. Eeek will always be there.

THE DEADLY EXPERIMENTS OF DR. EEEK is a very interesting Give Yourself Goosebumps book. There were many creepy parts. But a problem I had with this book was that there was always a new path to take, causing it to be impossible to find the best ending of the book. And a lot of the endings were pretty stupid. Aside from these problems, I recommend this book to people looking for a scary time.

Excellent book for the most competitive finance jobs

This book was critical in helping me get an internship in trading with a high-profile hedge fund this summer. Throughout the interviewing process, over 50% of the technical questions that I received were discussed in this book.

While the book is geared towards more technical positions and does involve a fair amount of math, I would still recommend it even if you are looking for a non-technical position with a hedge fund or an i-bank, since this book contains a lot of brain teasers and logical questions that are commonly asked in all finance interviews to test how well you can think on your feet and under time pressure.

Bottom line: Very comprehensive, very rigorous, the best I have see for hard-core finance jobs. This book is definitely heads and sholders above all of the Vault guides.

This is a great book. However, please be aware the 16th ed is out there already and cheaper than this old version. Essential preparation for finance interviews

This is a must for people heading to trading firms, banks, or other financial service firms for interviews. These firms typically scout for a few skill sets. One is general brainpower, as hard as that is to measure. Another is the more difficult math in finance, derivatives pricing. This book covers both in a quick and easy format to let you see where you stand. Moreover, if you can master the material in the book then you will be ready for the majority of an entry-level interview.

The derivatives questions cover "plain vanilla" options pricing and some basic understanding of the principles behind the formulas. Most firms want to see that you know the terms in the Black-Scholes equation and how options prices depend on things.

The earlier part of the book I find even more impressive. It's a nearly comprehensive list of the brain-teasers you get in this process. That's where the employer is trying to measure general brainpower. Of course, a brain-teaser you haven't seen before will give you pause and maybe elude you in the stress of an interview. But after reading this book the answers could be at the ready. The set of brain-teasers through history is actually very small. That is after distilling all the variations on them such as whether you are weighing coins or cannonballs and such. And that set of puzzles, questions designed to test basic reasoning and logic, without depending on formal math, is well covered in this book. In fact, in many interviews I have only encountered one single brain-teaser that is not in this book (and it's not a very good one either).

Finally Mr. Crack inserts notes on the culture of banks which might scare or excite the prospective employee. This book is both good orientation and preparation for starting a career in finance.

It is still relevant and helpful ten years later. That said, there is one area this book totally misses (because of what's happened in the past ten years). That is programming questions. Especially in the past couple of years most interviews will look for some software development skill on top of the general brainpower and command of financial derivatives. Tests on C++ or OOP are common these days. For that material you have to look elsewhere.

Frank M. Carrano is a professor emeritus of computer science at the University of Rhode Island. He received the Ph.D. degree in computer science from Syracuse University in 1969. This book was chosen by my instructor for our required c++ course. Needless to say, everybody in my class without c++ experience is severely struggling in this class. Those that have had a real Intro to c++ are doing ok.
I don't think it's fair for me to pan a book because I don't have the capacity(yet) to comprehend it's finer points. My frustration level would give this a 1 star rating. Instead, I gave this book 4 stars because:
1) The writer (maddeningly) leaves the best code, the stuff I REALLY want to see, as, (I quote)"The resolution of this particular difficulty is left to you as an exercise." ARGH! Not once, but over and over again, you will read statements like this.
2) There are no answers for any of the coding exercises. None.
How much educating does this do?
If you (like me) had to get this book because your professor decided on this as a good "Intro to c++" book. Help yourself out and buy "C++ Primer Plus" by Stephen Prata as a supplement. That book will give you the foundation that this book will build on.

Fair book, why a fifth edition?

I am a mathematician who is picking up some computer science coursework. I have been programming in C++ for approximately seven years.

Although some of the data structures and algorithms are new to me, I cannot take the viewpoint of a student seeing all of this material for the first time. I will nitpick at some of the author's choices.

The issue that bothered me the most was the author's choice to include exception specifications with function declarations. Many professional programmers, including Herb Sutter, have made excellent cases for the complete avoidance of exception specifications. It's perfectly fine and even useful to put them within a /*comment*/ for documentation purposes, but no one should EVER use them in actual code.

I also found it interesting that Carrano went to great lengths in the chapter on Stacks to talk about the implementation of recursive function calls using stacks. He is very specific in talking about RECURSIVE function calls. I am certainly not an expert, but it is my understanding that ALL function calls can be implemented using stacks, and I think it is a disservice to the reader if they believe recursive function calls are a special case.

My wife has a copy of the second edition of this book from her college days, when the authorship was shared with Helman and Veroff. A side-by-side comparison shows very little, if any, difference. The text is basically cut-and-pasted from one edition to the next. Perhaps some of the exercises are different. Authors who do this are taking advantage of cash-strapped students, because university instructors rightly feel the need to use the latest edition of a textbook.

The book does have some interesting segments. I particularly enjoyed the solutions to some of the applied problems, such as the chessboard problem, Mr. Spock's problem, and the event-driven simulation involving the bank queue.

I have an idea! Lets write a book about C++ data concepts but completely forgo using examples in C++. Learning the language isn't challenging enough and putting source code in a book like this is so yesterday!

Oh wait! Even better! Lets write all the concepts in UML instead of source code. It'll be like teaching students 2 courses at the same time! Ha ha! Brilliant.

I am completely dumb-founded as to why the author would explain abstract data types, as if the reader was learning it for the first time, but then not show simple working code examples. All you get is pseudo-code and UML.

The concepts explained in this book are not hard to understand once you get past the UML. It is when you try to do exercises and assignments to ACTUALLY LEARN the implementation (and pass the course) that you find the book has abandoned you.

Oh and there is in fact source code. If you are a registered instructor you get to download it. If not I guess you can buy a book that actually shows you some simple solutions that you can compile. Good luck with that.

Superb architecture in miniature

Catalog read at the Members Lounge at the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

This beautiful small exhibit is a perfect example of what treasures the Met can bring to its visitors. The indigenous Andean and Mesoamerican peoples of Latin America represented buildings in small clay and stone models of houses and temples apparently for funerary and burial rites, and to honor important people at shrines.

The exhibit is enclosed in its own smallish shrine and comprises artifacts from cultures of the Mayas, Aztecs, Recuay, and Nayarit, with objects dating back to the first millennium B.C. There is a five inch high -inch-tall stone Mezcalan temple for example, without great detail but nonetheless quite powerful.

A 12 inch high Nayarit house model depicts a feast scene on the upper level, while the family’s dead, who would have been traditionally buried under the building, are below. The piece is one of the most complex architectural models to originate from the ancient Americas, according to the exhibit catalog; it is so detailed that the Met furnished visitors with small flashlights to examine the interior.

A similar sized Nayarit a ball-court game diorama in clay depicts a game that occurred between 200 B.C. and 500 A.D. At the top is a row of onlookers watching players at the base. One player is hitting the ball with the side of his leg.

There are a number of smaller objects, and all of the pieces in the exhibit are described with some analysis of their functions and with excellent photographs in this excellent guide to the exhibit.

Try to see the exhibit before it leaves in September; this catalog is an excellent memory device and will also give you very good impression of the treasures themselves if you can't see them in person.

About the Author
B. Rama Rao is a principal engineer at the MITRE Corporation. He received his Ph.D. in applied physics from Harvard University. W. Kunysz works for Nov Atel, Inc. An inventor of six patents, he holds a Master of Nautical Sciences degree from Gdynia Maritime University in Poland. R. Fante held various engineering positions at Avco Corporation, the U.S. Air Force, Textron Corporation, and most recently at the MITRE Corporation. He received his Ph.D. in electrical engineering from Princeton University. K. McDonald is the lead signal processing engineer at the MITRE Corporation. He holds a Ph.D. in electrical engineering from Lehigh University.

McDonald, have done an outstanding job of writing a book that will allow the reader to obtain more details on the latest antenna designs.

Authors Rao, Kunysz, Fante and McDonald, begin with a discussion on the important requirements for GNSS antennas. Next, the authors discuss fixed reception pattern antennas and high-gain directional antennas. The authors also focus on the three important classes of GNSS antennas: multiband antennas, handset antennas, and active antennas. Then, they continue with a description of the design and signal processing techniques used in adaptive antenna arrays for mitigating the effects of interference and jamming. The authors then describe in great detail the effects of the aircraft fuselage on the radiation pattern of a GNSS antenna. Next, they describe techniques used for measuring important antenna parameters such as Gain, polarization axial ration, PCO and PCV, and group delay variation. Finally, they discuss typical antenna and site dependent errors that occur during very precise GNSS measurements and methods for avoiding such errors.
