About the Author
Lorin D’Costa is an International Master and a full-time chess teacher. He coaches some of the top chess schools in the UK, some of England’s strongest junior players, and also the England team at World and European Youth Championships.

Great book, but falsely advertised by Amazon

I'm a tournament player with an Expert rating and have played the Scheveningen throughout my chess career. One of my best games ever was a win with the Scheveningen against an International Master in a major tournament in New York City. So I was eager to read this book. I'm about half way through and can say without hesitation that it is exceptional. The move-by-move commentary is an ideal approach for learning this opening because mastery of the Scheveningen depends more on understanding core ideas and piece placements than on memorization of variations. Also, most of the games are from major Grandmaster tournaments of the past several years. The author's writing style is reminiscent of John Nunn's wonderful book "Understanding Chess Move by Move".
One warning regarding the Kindle edition (the version I bought): It was listed on Amazon with a print length of 360 pages. The high number of pages (compared to most other chess opening books I own) was one of the main reasons I bought it. However, I discovered afterwards that the actual print length of the hardcopy version of this book is only 272 pages! As it tunrs out, Amazon "estimates" the print length of Kindle books by "using settings to closely represent a physical book". It's a blatant form of false advertising when the estimated print length is 88 pages longer than the actual print length! Why not just list the actual print length instead of using this highly mis-leading method? Shame on Amazon for "rigging the numbers" in this manner!
Update: a few days after I wrote the above comments, Amazon updated the description of the Kindle version on its website. It now shows a print length of 272 pages instead of the misleading 360.

Best chess book ever!

This Scheveningen move-by-move book from D'Costa is literally the best chess book I have ever purchased. I am not a professional reviewer, but I was compelled to write this after purchasing so many openings books that disappointed me. He uses the Socratic method on every page, with questions like "Why does black play his f6 knight to e8 instead of d7?" And then he shows you the tactical possibilities as well as the more subtle positional advantages. Since I'm only rated 1400 there is a lot of stuff over my head I'm sure, but I'm still getting a ton out of this book. Imagine if Irving Chernev wrote a book on an opening, but then embellished even more on the ideas and concrete variations within the opening. I knew the sicilian could be tricky, but he is sharing tactics to watch out for every couple moves that I just don't have eyes to see in an over-the-board game. I feel like I'm not just learning openings, but the middle-game too. The games he selected are mostly recent (2009, 2010) but for instructional purposes he uses some older games as well. The first chapter is Kasparov and the Scheveningen, and by itself it's worth the price of the book. It is written from black's perspective, but he never makes outlandish claims like "black has a won game here" when the position still has possibilities. If you already play this opening, or you are looking for something you can play with a more thorough understanding, buy this book.

Useful book

The book about Scheveningen is a very useful book. First of all it is impossible to play sicilian defense without understanding Scheveningen. In his book D'Costa showed every possible variations and explains main strategical aspects of Scheveningen. It is a hard work to go through and understand the ideas of the variations and the games (very nicely selected by the way) but it is definetely pays off.
