All-consuming read that leaves the reader to make up their own mind
By Jessica Lux
This is an amazing and all-consuming story. LeBlanc transports the reader into an extended family in the Bronx. She recounts the relationships, the fights, the betrayals, the drugs, the crime, the unintentional preganancies, the jail time, and much more for her intertwined cast of characters. Everything is presented as is--the only reflection on the characters' motivation is their own. LeBlanc does not try to extrapolate from their experiences or impart her own beliefs on the reader. The reader is left to draw his or her own conclusions from the interactions they read about.

It's easy enough to say women in the ghetto need to start using contraceptions and get off their butts and get jobs. I learned through the people in this book that life is much more complicated than that. Children aren't afforded learning opportunities because their parents are using drugs and having unsavory characters around. No one wakes the teenaged girls up to tell them about pregnancy. The girls have no sense of self worth and want to have children to force the fathers of their kids to love them. Every woman in here was once sexually abused, so responsible mothers can't their there children with friends or family members who have random people traipsing through the house, and that prevents them from getting jobs and getting out of the house.

This book comes full-circle with the story of one Bronx family. It opens with Jessica, pregnant at age 16. It ends 16 years later with Jessica's daughter Serena ready to get in as much trouble as her mother did at that age, despite the major strides Jessica has made at becoming a functioning member of society.

LeBlanc's dedication to her task--combing through trial records, wiretaps, police reports, child welfare reports, and conducting years of interviews--has really paid off in this compelling narrative.

Very mixed emotions
By Amazon Customer
I grew up in one of the neighborhoods portrayed in this book, and while I believe the author has accurately described Jessica, Coco and their friends and relatives, these people are not representative of everyone who lives in the South Bronx. There are many, many people in these neighborhoods who shun the drug-dealing and thug lifestyle. These people work hard at low paying jobs (think doormen, porters, mailroom clerks, cashiers) and scrimp and save to send their children to Catholic school. They don't hang out on street corners and they don't allow their children to do so either. And they are the victims of people like Boy George and Cesar, they are the ones whose apartments are robbed, whose children are beaten on the way home from school, whose daughters are harassed.

I hate the idea that middle-class white liberals are reading this book and getting some kind of voyeuristic thrill. I suspect they wouldn't be nearly as enthralled by a book that chronicled the lives of the people I've described above, the ones who try to live upstanding lives despite overwhelming poverty and the threats of the street.

Profound

This has to be one of the best books that I have ever read. LeBlanc grasped "it", the life, the city, the love or lack there of, the lifestyle, the losses and the helplessness. I read this book like I would have an article in Rolling Stone, holding on to every word, wanting to know what happened next. I could not put it down. It was a personal experience for me, having lived a portion of my life like the girls in Random Family. I must say that one of my frustrations has been that there are not enough of these kind of stories out there for us to read. This is the reality of our world, our social structure. Welfare is not a luxury, housing systems are not free living, not all criminals should remain prisioners. These are everyday people caught up in a cycle, a family cyle, generation to generation. These are our neighbors, the woman at the supermarket, the girl at the doctors office, just random people. And this book is just about that, a random family. There are so many families like this, torn apart, looking for the love that so often is mistaken for money, sex or a drug. I would recommend this book to anyone who asked. I believe that Ms. LeBlanc will be one of the greatest journalists of all time. I am so impressed with her writing and her willingness to study her subjects, living in less that acceptable accomodations, dedicating herself and her life to the research, becoming apart of their families. I consider this book one of the best, I hope that you will too.

Such a great conglomeration of works! I didn't realize it was going to be the author's commentary on the works, though, I thought the book just had samplings of each work.

Nice collection of primary sources in English
By E. Kim
This is a nice book to get for anyone serious about studying early Korean History (pre-Yi dynasty). It gives you a taste of the Samguk Sagi, Samguk Yusa, The Chronicles of Koryo as well as early Wei China accounts and the controversial inscription on King Kwanggetto's Monolith. From these documents, you can learn, quite literally from the horse's mouth, the struggle of the Three Kingdoms against each other, the struggle of the later Three Kingdoms and the thought and philosophy of the people at that time. Please bear in mind, these are excerpts, not full texts of the primary sources. These only give you a taste and flavor of the full texts.

Didn't come super fast but was in good condition

Didn't come super fast but was in good condition. The book itself wasn't what I thought it would be. It's a bunch of documents or articles about different Korean. Mainly about how to act. I was hoping it would be more about the daily life of Koreans a long time ago.

  • Great product!

From Library Journal
Hill vividly documents the experiences of 19 first-year managers. Initially, these managers focused on formal authority and setting business performance agendas while ignoring the responsibilities of accomplishing things through others and network building. "They were genuinely surprised, though, by the discontinuity between the producer and manager roles and between their expectations and the realities of management." Hill clearly explains the interpersonal problems of dealing with employee diversity and evaluating the performance of others along with the stressful and emotional side of making the transformation to management. She also addresses how new managers can learn from their experiences and the implications for those responsible for management development. Unlike Joseph and Susan Berk's Managing Effectively ( LJ 6/1/91), which examines what first-time managers should know, Hill discusses the actual transformation of individual performers into effective new managers. Strongly recommended for all types of business collections.

A must-read for managers (new or old)
By RamblingLibrarian
I highly recommend this to anyone involved in "management", particularly where you have to lead people.

The value of this book -- to me -- was not that it revealed anything new (most managers would instinctively know what the issues are when working with a team). What it did for me was to give me assurance that the trials and tribulations that I've gone through (some of which are daily occurances) are normal. That told me that I AM NOT ALONE! -- for management is a lonely business.

This book took me sometime to finish (440 over pages) but a very readable book. Not overly academic. I particularly liked the section on "Is Management Really for Me?".

Be like a duck..
By Nilendu Misra
Some insights from the highly readable book -

1) 80% of the time people reach out to you as their manager is for a 'negative' reason. Do not be a Prima Donna and let it effect your outside reaction. Be like a duck, calm and serene on outside and paddle like hell underneath.

2) Learning is a two-way street. Your manager also learns from you. Exchanging candid feedback is like a protected left turn, however, where your manager always has prerogative.

3) First line manager has significant higher number of pulls - one from upper chain of management, another from multiple personalities who are deeply embedded into delivery.

4) Managing people is often being able to deal with 'half-truths'.

5) When top individual performers become manager, it is often 'heap reversal'. Organization takes a superstar from the top of the heap, and puts her at the bottom of another. This indeed causes the big surprise.

Men and the Emergence of Polite Society, 1660-1800, by Philip (Research Editor New Dictionary Of National Biography) Carter

This book presents an account of masculinity in eighteenth century Britain. In particular it is concerned with the impact of an emergent polite society on notions of manliness and the gentleman.

From the 1660s a new type of social behaviour, politeness, was promoted by diverse writers. Based on continental ideas of refinement, it stressed the merits of genuine and generous sociability as befitted a progressive and tolerant nation. Early eighteenth century writers encouraged men to acquire the characteristics of politeness by becoming urbane town gentlemen. Later commentators promoted an alternative culture of sensibility typified by the man of feeling. Central to both was the need to spend more time with women, now seen as key agents of refinement. The relationship demanded a reworking of what it meant to be manly.

Being manly and polite was a difficult balancing act. Refined manliness presented new problems for eighteenth century men. What was the relationship between politeness and duplicity? Were feminine actions such as tears and physical delicacy acceptable or not? Critics believed polite society led to effeminacy, not manliness, and condemned this failure of male identity with reference to the fop.

This book reveals the significance of social over sexual conduct for eighteenth century definitions of masculinity. It shows how features traditionally associated with nineteenth century models were well established in the earlier figure of the polite town-dweller or sentimental man of feeling.

Using personal stories and diverse public statements drawn from conduct books, magazines, sermons and novels, this is a vivid account of the changing status of men and masculinity as Britain moved into the modern period.

Review
"Both for Christians and skeptics alike, this volume is as accessible and helpful a treatment of the problem of suffering that you can find. Anyone interested in apologetics in general-and the argument against God from evil in particular-should own and read it."―Tim Keller, Redeemer Presbyterian Church, New York City

"We are all different, and we all suffer differently, so no one-size-fits-all answer will ever satisfy. But here, two of Christendom's ablest Christian voices present their best responses and give incisive critiques of the major options. Their conversation is an open invitation to help us all reach an 'examined life' for ourselves."―Os Guinness, author of Unspeakable: Facing Up to the Challenge of Evil

"Suffering and evil are persistent and universal problems, but no one has tackled these issues with more penetrating insights, engaging stories, and practical answers than Ravi Zacharias and Vince Vitale. WHY SUFFERING is both academically satisfying and spiritually enriching. Every reader will come away, as I have, with fresh stimulation, new enlightenment, and personal satisfaction."―Norman L. Geisler, Ph.D., author or co-author of over 90 books including If God, Why Evil? and Professor of Apologetics at VeritasSeminary.com

"In Why Suffering, two of the world's leading Christian Apologists address the world's hardest question. Avoiding the glib or the abstract, they offer us a highly readable, intellectually robust, biblically framed, and truly compelling answer, filled with hope in the God who enters our suffering to end our suffering."―Simon Ponsonby, Pastor of Theology St. Aldates Oxford, author of God is For Us, More, and And the Lamb Wins

You could fill a library with the books on this subject, but in my opinion, there is none better than this one
By Joshua Olds
We ask it every day. We ask it in the big things and the small things. We ask it when our world implodes around us and when we explode into our world. It is a universal question asked in every human language and guttural moan imaginable. It is asked the world over, from the richest to the poorest, from the East to the West, from ancient times to our modern days. It is a question inherent to our being, the answer to which provides the answer for our ontological longing.

Why Suffering?

Zacharias begin the book by elaborating on the question. What it is the people mean when they ask this question? How are we supposed to answer? Among other things, he develops the difference between the intellectual question and the personal question. In other words, the beginnings of an answer lie in why the question is being asked. Is this just another intellectual exercise for a skeptic or have they recently been through a tragic loss. Zacharias suggests that while the problem of evil can be discussed philosophically, it is usually best answered pastorally.

From this introduction, Zacharias and Vitale trade chapters on various responses to the problem of suffering. Space prohibits a full analysis, so suffice it to say that Zacharias writes on the responses of freedom and morality while Vitale writes about grace, the Cross, and hope. Zacharias also writes a magnificent chapter midway through that compares the Christian answer to the answers from Buddhism, Islam, and naturalism.

Every chapter in the book is a goldmine. I suggest you take just over a week to read this book and focus on one chapter a day. Let the material sink it, grapple with it, think through it, and incorporate it into your own life.

One thing to note: Ravi and Vince could not have more different writing styles. Ravi’s writes the way he speaks, with such precision and clarity that I can hear the lilt of his voice in my head as I read his thoughts. Vince’s writing is more rugged and conversational and also fits his own personality and speaking tone. It’s jarring, at times, if you read more than one chapter at a time, but does not affect the quality of the book.

You could fill a library with the books on this subject, but in my opinion, there is none better for the average reader than what Zacharias and Vitale offer here. Clear, simply stated answers confirmed through a wealth of resources. Everyone needs to read this book because everyone deals with this question. Do yourself and those around you a favor and pick it up now.

A brilliant mix of deep thought and personal insight to tackle this challenging question
By Amazon Customer
The question of why there is suffering in this world is a difficult one, and a personal one for many, but in "Why Suffering?" the authors address this thorny issue with a wonderful balance of considered thought, studied Philosophy, and personal insight. The authors write in a warm and easily readable tone, while still taking the topic seriously and considering it from a number of angles.

Whether you are someone struggling through suffering yourself, someone supporting a friend through a difficult time, a Christian wanting to know how faith answers this difficult question, or an agnostic wanting to see whether the claims of religion stand up in the face of evil: this well-considered, intellectually rigorous, and deeply insightful book is a must read.

One of the most helpful and thought provoking books I have read in a long time.

I couldn't stop eating this book!
By Magster
Why Suffering? is a relatively small book (229 pages) that is crammed full of very large questions and even larger answers. Ravi Zacharias and Vince Vitale each offer several chapters that respond to the contention that “if there really is a loving God, there would be no pain and suffering in the world.”
While the topics of logic and reason may not be at the top of anyone's “Conversation Starters” list, the authors use both to provide intellectual answers to emotional questions. They differentiate between logic and reason, making clear that “using logic as a test for truth and reasoning does not always result in the same implications of what is true...It is imperative that we understand not only the logical problem that is being presented but the reasoning process that we are bringing to bear upon this very important question.”
Almost every page of the book prompts highlighting nuggets that bear further study; they make you want to call your study partner to share an “aha” discovery.
Whether you are a Christian or a skeptic or a seeker, this book will provide you with hours of inspiration and many interesting topics for conversation.
