Perfect for bathroom reading.

Honestly, a good little book for putting on the back of the toilet.

Interesting topics, nice little anecdotes, and a quick read. Good for hanging out on the porcelain throne for a bit and losing yourself in the stories.

A few stories caused me to bookmark and research further, which takes you down the rabbit hole that is Wikipedia.

Good read. Nice and compact book too.

Don't waste your money

Although I found the content interesting enough, there was no depth! I mean I read this cover to cover in about an hour. Every "story" or "fact" is dedicated to 2 pages. About 3 paragraphs a bunch of illustrations or pictures that are really of not much need and some small type "other facts". I would have rather had a list of the facts and read wiki instead. Not worth the money!

200 Pages of WOW!

In the past, I have typically not been one for advocating the idea of revising history as we know it, but this book has caused me to wonder if the lessons from the past that have been taught to so many of us have amounted to a series of partially distorted articles, at best, or a pack of lies, at worst.
In one account, there was a leading nineteenth-century American literary figure who wrote a fictional work on one of the most famous explorers from the late 1400's. It portrayed this particular individual as mainly a visionary who overcame the superstitions of his time in order to make great discoveries. Though this picture might be partly true, a key issue brought forth was entirely fictional. Nevertheless, this particular book became very popular as a required reading for schoolchildren and over time, because of the heroic elements espoused, the tales were so popular that people wanted to believe them to be factual. Since then, this author's version of this explorer's events "would long endure in the national consciousness" and be immortalized as history as it actually happened. Talk about a paradox: to be regarded as someone who would go down in history as someone who overcame myths in such a way that it, itself, is another myth. Sheesh!!
Though many a fact finder might wish that this particular legend could be isolated as the only fairy tale that has been misconstrued for truth, The Greatest Stories Never Told reveals to the reader that this is not so. There are other accounts that show that our significant historical events are not always due to forthright purposes set out by forthcoming, stout individuals. Sometimes random elements come into play à la The Butterfly Effect that can have a significant impact upon the outcome of a war. For instance, without giving away the details, so little as one piece of paper might have prevented General George Washington's rise to greatness against the British.
In sum, The Greatest Stories Never Told is a fascinating book. In my opinion, it can set forth arguments and debates covering other specialized fields, especially philosophy, political science, physics, and theology. I have always been convinced that we have a tendency to portray history the way we want to either remember it or learn it, but the manner in which some of these bits and pieces have been espoused for decades and centuries is quite disturbing.

Horney Still Tied To Freud

Unfortunately, this is the worst Horney's book, for several reasons. First, This is a compendium of articles and speeches, not a book that has unity, a beginning and end. It was not edited by the author and therefore, it lacks the good flow of thought that her other books have.
Second, these writings are from an earlier phase, when clearly Horney was still very attached and afraid (?) to challenge Freud. I am not going to beat a dead horse here, since there are so many critics of Freud around, but some of his theories sound just like wild guessings to the point of being ridiculous. It feels like Freud has never seen a real child in his life. Horney accepts Freud's psychosexual ideas and swallows them hook and sink: there is no doubt that Horney at that time (1928, 1930) was totally Freudian. Her criticism is just a hint, in two or three very small topics, like penis envy in girls. And even in these topics, she doesn't really challenge her guru and idol Freud.
The later Horney with her brilliant neurosis theory is totally absent from this book. I wonder what her ideas would be had she written a book on the same topic just before her death.

A POSTHUMOUS COLLECTION OF ESSAYS (NOT NECESSARILY REPRESENTATIVE OF HER FINISHED VIEWS)

Karen Horney (1885-1952) was a German psychoanalyst and psychiatrist, who is sometimes classified as "Neo-Freudian," although she questioned/challenged many of Freud's theories (particularly about psychosexual development).

These essays (mostly from her earlier period; many of her ideas matured from the position expressed in some of these essays) were collected and published in 1967 after Horney's death, so they lack the cohesiveness of her books (e.g., Neurosis and Human Growth: The Struggle Towards Self-Realization, Self-Analysis, Our Inner Conflicts: A Constructive Theory of Neurosis). There is a helpful introductory essay by editor Harold Kelman.

Here are some representative quotations from the book:

"Or, to look at it from the point of view of succession in time, that it is wounded womanhood which gives rise to the castration complex, and that it is this complex which injures (not PRIMARILY, however) feminine development."

The Book is Good, But the Movie is Better

The Tall Stranger by Louis L'Amour is well worth reading, but the movie starring Joel McCrea is better. As I have previously stated in other reviews of L'Amour's work, his early novels are his best, with one or two exceptions. In the beginning he was only concerned about telling us a good story, but in later years began to philosophize until it reached a point where it interferred with his story telling ability. I know most authors have something they want to say in their work which they want us to understand and agree with, but they can get carried away, and when there is no editorial advice provided to check this urge it can run amok. But there is none of that in this book; it is story telling at its best.

The objective of this book is to present processing techniques, specimen preparation, analysis of test methods, testing, and data reduction schemes in order to determine mechanical properties, thermal expansion coefficients, and fracture and strength data for advanced composite materials. Emphasis is placed on practical matters such as preparation and testing of specimens and data reduction methodology. Several of the test methods included are ASTM standards, while others are being reviewed in ASTM committees and elsewhere to refine test geometries, test procedures and test reduction schemes. . . . The methods presented in some detail are deemed the most appropriate and widely accepted.

Fantastic Reference but WAAAYYYY overpriced.

This book is one-stop shopping for all your composites testing questions. The authors provide clear, concise, and correct advice and experimental procedures for almost all routine and less-routine composite tests you might want to run in a lab or graduate class. Because of this it absolutely belongs on your reference bookshelf, however, it's way overpriced. When I first bought this book, it was $50 bucks. inflation. ouch.

However, it is cheaper than buying each ASTM standard that each test in this book is based on.

For example, he wrote essays on "The heart of darkness" (Joseph Conrad), "Dubliners" (James Joyce), "Manhattan Transfer" (John Dos Passos), "Mrs. Dalloway" (Virginia Woolf), "The great Gatsby" (F. S. Fitzgerald), "Nadja" (André Breton), "The human condition" (André Malraux), "Animal farm" (George Orwell), "Doctor Zhivago" (B. Pasternak), and many more...
Not only are those essays very interesting to read, due to the fact that his prose is incredibly fluent, but they also allow you to know something about the books you haven't managed to read yet, turning this book into an useful guide :)
