Bogdanov has written about biological processes from the viewpoint of a physicist. The ten chapters may be read in any order to obtain an intelligent introduction or review for any of the topics, which deal with the electrical nature of life, the functioning of muscles, respiration, circulation, and so on... The presentations are clear, light-hearted, even funny on occasion -- a great and unusual accomplishment for a science text that does not talk down to its readers. The book is well illustrated and clearly written, although the text occasionally becomes a bit convoluted. This may be the result of its translation from Russian. The author provided a very thorough and up-to-date set of references for skeptics as well as for those who wish to dig deeper.

Disappointing

This book was a bit of a disappointment, particularly as I had enjoyed the author's Cicero. Full of abrupt transitions and oddly-placed digressions, Augustus reads like a rough draft in need of a good editor. My guess it that this book was rushed to print after the unexpected success of Cicero, but Everitt won't win any new fans with this effort.

Like many other ships used by the Merchant Marine, the Marine Transport Line's Marine Electric was very old and made of “dirty steel” (steel with excess sulfur content). Many of these vessels were in terrible condition and broke down frequently. Yet the government persistently turned a blind eye to the potential dangers, convinced that the economic return on keeping these ships was worth the risk.

Beneath the surface of Frump's overblown, melodramatic writing style lies the intriguing story of Robert Cusick, one of only three crew members to survive the sinking of the Marine Electric, a coal ship that ran aground in the waters off Norfolk, Va., in 1983. Cusick knew that the vessel, a converted WWII rust bucket, was riddled with problems that had not been addressed by its owner. The book chronicles not only its foundering, but also Cusick's fight to expose the system that fostered such an avoidable tragedy, as Frump revisits the story for which he won two national reporting awards when he broke it for the Philadelphia Inquirer. While the account does boast a wealth of facts and details, it is undone by Frump's purple prose. In a typical passage, he writes, "And then, when Kelly could go no higher, as he tried to climb another rail that wasn't there, climb toward the sky away from it all, the sea was upon him. He bellowed into the storm with all his might.... A plaintive, savage, primordial cry, a desperate hollering for help, the sort of sound a zebra might make as the lions bring it down." Frump also employs a staccato, ersatz Hemingway tempo that quickly grows old: "The flames did not care. The steel did not care. Most particularly, the ocean did not care." While Cusick's struggle is noble, it is overshadowed and rendered ineffective by such histrionics.

Good recount of the events and aftermath of the Marine Electric

Well researched account of the events and aftermath of the loss of the Marine Electric. It is good to see how far we have come. It is also worth noting the eerie similarities to the recent loss of the El Faro. Both were older Jones Act vessels. Both were scheduled for replacement and making their final few runs. Both seem to have not accounted for the weather.

This book is DOA

Be advised, believe it or not, this book is ALL text. There are absolutely NO photos, maps, charts, or drawings. How can you possibly tell the story of a ship sinking with nothing but text? The Marine Electric had a fascinating history as a WW2 T-2 tanker that was converted into a bulk freighter. Where are the builder's photos? WW2 era shots? Conversion diagrams or plans? The navigation charts showing the wreck site? This book was obviously written by an amateur, you can tell by the rambling, over the top prose, lengthy, asides that distract from the story line, and the lack of willingness to research and pay for photos and other visual aids. The book is written for someone unfamiliar with ships and the sea since it goes into explanations of the simplest marine terms that most people interested in reading the book would already know. $24.95 brand new? I don't think so Tim. Buy it used and don't pay more than $7.00 with shipping. I bought it sight unseen, what a dissapointment!

Mr. Middleton shifted. He’d obviously made his decision. He twined his fingers in my hair possessively and tugged my head up so that our gazes met. He said, “No, I think I’d like a little privacy with you.” He looked up at Mr. Williams and asked, “That all right?”

Wonderful!

Karen Marie morning has been debatedly my most favored author since I read the fever books, but this reinforces my awe and opinion greatly of her grace and imagination, as if the fever series weren't enough proof of her wonderful talent! Loved every minute of every book and am positively "fashed" that there is no more at the moment to glue my face to.

Great series,keeps you wrapped up in the story, characters are well thought out and interesting. All the stuff you want in a romance big muscles and a scottish accent, what more can you ask for?

Absolutely worth the price!!

I ended up reading this collection of books because I bought the fever series bundle & loved it so much that I wanted to read EVERYTHING Karen Marie Moning had to offer.
I'm Not a fan of the romance genre. I was actually embarrassed to have the cover on the carousel of my kindle fire. Regardless of my usual disdain for the usually format style writing of romance novels,(man & woman meet, hate each other passionately or due to some long standing feud, couple ends up loving as passionately as they had hated... The end.
These stories were not written like that. The character's were quirky, original,& realistic. There was of course the erotic scenes that as a younger person gave me a very unrealistic idea of what to expect from the basic male ( I felt the first guy I was with was terribly lacking & must have had a awful time in gym class lol.
Seriously though each one of the novels in this bundle had me laughing out loud, blushing when I was reading them in public because I was so engrossed in the stories that I walked around with my e-copy of this in hand & considered the world & all it's inhabitants a distraction to my reading.
When I finished the last story I literally felt like I had been spat back into my apartment , that my fiancé was not nearly romantic enough & that there may be some fun in reading romance novels after all. The price was great, the fact that you get it minutes after you order it is brilliant and the new "bundle" possibilities are always something I seek out. There is nothing better than not having to wait a year for the next book in a series. I would highly recommend this book to fans of the "Fever Series" by Karen Marie Moning which I also discovered thanks to an email for "people who bought "x" item have also purchased this item. I'm very happy with the price & the days of enjoyment I received from buying and reading "the highlander series bundle"
